After drying off, and cursing, I ventured into Banbury town with my wonderful mother who looked wonderfully colourful today in pink trousers.
If you are not sure where Banbury some argue it is the centre of the universe. Although I am not sure if that's just my social circle, and maybe I am just gullible and believe them. This might be more familiar 'ride a cock horse to Banbury cross to see a fine lady upon a white horse' ... So this centre of the universe thing might not be such a myth if we are having nursery rhymes written about us. The geographical location is south of Birmingham but north of Oxford. Simples.
I have had people talking about a new place to eat called Little Amsterdam. It is a concept bought over by a lady to "remind her of home" (actually quote right there).
After a couple of minutes wait we were seated at a table by the counter, so we could eye up the Dutch apple tart. It was also away from everyone else so perfect for a gossip and hidden from disapproving looks as I photographed the food. You know the look I mean. Even worse when it makes the shutter camera noise and you just can hide the embarrassment of people thinking you just love food.
Anyway, the menu is predominantly based around pancakes, and that does even includes steak on a pancake. I don't do savoury so that wasn't for me as I am definitely a sweet girl. (Insert standard comment from mother "you definitely aren't a sweet girl").
On first glance, the prices were slightly higher than I was expecting, but with regulars returning through the door the food obviously reflects the price. I also think you pay for the authenticity and the character of Little Amsterdam.
After much deliberation we ordered the apple tart and some mini pancakes.
The pancakes were fluffy and light with a butter and coulis accompaniment. We were recommended how best to eat them, and the butter worked really well with the overall taste. I don't love icing sugar but a slight pancake tap got rid of most of it. These pancakes were £5.95, and the other choices were a similar price with toppings being an additional cost but add to making it your own.
The apple tart was amazing! At only £2.50 it was a cheaper choice on the menu so great if you have spent all your money in river island beforehand. I wish I had been shopping to river island before, but we were on a timing constraint so the post office was were I had been spending my money beforehand. The life of a bride to be and disorganised invitation mailing. Well anyway back to the tart (not me) we chose it because I love anything like that, and it was my favourite out of the two. Apparently it is grandmas recipe, which you can tell straightaway. Big thumbs up and the cinnamon and pastry was really well balanced.
Overall, it was nice to try somewhere different and I think it is great for taking children. I remember going with mum to pancake houses as a child and the children there today were all smiling (especially when their pancakes came to the table).
Also it's nice to see independent businesses with a personal touch. I am sure there is a story behind the venture, and that is where the passion will be from.
Plus, I forgot all about my washing drama which can't be bad.
