I fell in love with Greenwich this weekend with its beautiful park, fantastic shops and stunning market
My best friend and her fabulous husband have just bought their first home together in London, and after spending the last four years partying away in Clapham Junction they have moved out to the suburbs. They were slightly dubious as all of a sudden they are entirely reliant on South Eastern Trains, which if you know London are a huge risk, but when you are living next to Greenwich Park with a stunning view over Canary Wharf I think you can cope
After a night of Gin and Tonics, and several bottles of Prosecco, we were feeling slightly worse for wear on Sunday. After a little bit of persuading we decided a nice walk and a trip to Greenwich market was just what we needed. Although the hills in the park are pretty steep so I don't think my husband relaxed much as he mostly feared that I would make my way down on my bottom and not on my feet. (I made it on my feet by the way)
The market is adorned with fairy lights and the smell of mulled wine filled the stalls as we made our way around. Each stall had an array of hand crafted items with so much variance. I often go to markets and am disappointed that the majority are selling similar clothing but this just wasn't the case. Even better rather than pushy sales tactics they spoke to you about what they do and they really took the time to explain their silver jewellery, or their stunning hand painted imagery.
Then the hangover fully kicked in ... and it was time to make our way to the food area. The market is divided in half with all the catering stalls at one end making it really easy to grab some lunch or a cake. We had a roast dinner being cooked for us so we refrained from Lunch, but I will definitely be going back.
The choice was incredible and there really was something for everyone. Large hot dogs were sold in freshly baked French baguettes; hot pancakes were topped with whatever you wanted; and Jamaican food left us salivating.
For those that regularly read my blog, or know me well, would predict I headed straight for the cakes and I was not disappointed. Ruby's of London are an Artisan Vegan Patisserie and are at the market every Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 5.30pm. We were served by two really friendly ladies who took the time to explain the ingredients used and provided recommendations. My husband and I chose the carrot cake which for a large slice was £3.50 and AMAZING! So moist and tasty. My best friend opted for the Red Velvet Cake which was £3 and looked incredible. All lovingly home made and all tasting fantastic. To find out more about Ruby's of London click here
I was really impressed with the whole atmosphere and layout. It was such a great way to spend the day and I would definitely go back!
Have you been to a Christmas market? Where would you recommend?
