An interview with a lucky lady

In my job I get to attend many spectacular events and be part of some amazing education, and this week I got to meet one lucky lady who received a well-deserved Scholarship
Sophie Freegard has been awarded the ‘Step up & Shine’ Scholarship and has started her journey this week of bespoke education work £2,500. I caught up with Sophie to find out more about her and learn more about this brilliant opportunity.

Okay, Sophie who are you and where do you come from?
I am Sophie Freegard and I live in a little town called Melsham, which is near the beautiful city of Bath. At 16 I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser and so I left school and started my training and now 9 years on I am still doing what I love at Tops Hair Salon and Beauty in Wiltshire

I love what you are wearing, I am all about the bold colours, but how would you describe your style?
I do like to be different I guess and be individual and that dictates what I wear and how I look. In my spare time I love spending time with my horse so I have half my wardrobe for my country girl look and half my wardrobe for city fashion

Before you explain more about this opportunity, tell me what inspires you in the industry?
My manager Vics inspires me on a day to day basis with how successful she is. She motivates me to be the best I can be and that is what makes me love me job. I also love Errol Douglas and Debbie G is amazing

You have just finished a 3 day course with the legendary Debbie G, which I will be finding out more about next week, but for those that don’t know what is the Step up and Shine Scholarship?
The late Christofer Mann started the Scholarship as a way of giving young people without the resources the opportunity to learn and develop. Through a mentoring session with Debbie G I have an action packed year of education and I cannot wait

How did you apply?
It is run in conjunction with The Fellowship for British Hairdressing and the National Hairdressers’ Federation which was how I found out about it. The advertise the opportunity, plus I had heard about Ollie Vines who won last year and I was desperate to follow in his shoes and get the industry skills he was given. After submitting a YouTube video, I was invited to a one on one interview which I was so nervous about. We had two rounds of judging in the end

I was there when you were announced at the Presidents Night on Monday 20th April, and you looked shocked when your name was announced. How did you feel?
I was so shocked. Honestly I was shaking with excitement. It was the best feeling ever! I was nervous about going on stage but everyone was clapping and cheering. I will never forget that day

**Ends**

Massive congratulations, and I can’t wait to hear how this week went at the beautiful and renowned Billi Currie salon

Sophie has promised to keep me posted on what she is doing so you definitely need to watch this space. This girl is bubbly, creative and very determined and one to watch
